Ask five vendors what drafting costs and you get five different numbers, because they are quoting five different things. An hourly freelance rate, a firm’s blended rate, a per-sheet redline price and a monthly dedicated-team retainer are not the same unit, and comparing them directly is how a number gets misquoted.
The short answer: published 2026 rates put CAD drafting at roughly $18 to $85 an hour, per-sheet work at $25 to $180 depending on turnaround, and dedicated-team retainers from about $2,000 to $8,000 a month. Every range depends on scope and who is quoting, so treat this as a check, not a price to expect.
This page is for principals and ops managers who want to sanity-check a quote. It compiles rates published by pricing pages, market data providers and vendors, each dated and sourced, organized by task and unit. Skyline has not published its own rates; where this page mentions Skyline, it says so.
Why rates vary so much
Four things move the number before anyone talks about skill or quality.
- The unit. Hourly, per sheet, per square foot, monthly retainer, or flat per project. A “$25” number is meaningless without its unit.
- Who is billing. A freelancer, a small firm, a large outsourcing vendor and an in-house architect all carry different overhead.
- Turnaround. Cad Crowd’s own published redline pricing nearly triples for a one-day rush versus standard service. Speed costs.
- Region. Coastal, high-cost metros run higher than the rest of the country in every source below that breaks out geography.
Keep these four in mind reading the table. They explain most of the spread.

How to read a quote against this index
Three questions, in order.
- What unit is the quote in? Match it to the right table above before comparing numbers.
- What is the turnaround? A rush rate is not comparable to a standard one. Cad Crowd’s own figures show close to a 3x difference.
- What is included? A per-sheet rate may or may not include revisions, coordination or QA. Ask, and put the answer in the scope note (see the cost model guide).
A quote that lands outside these ranges is not automatically wrong. It may reflect scope, complexity or region this index does not capture. But it is a reason to ask what is different.
What this index does not tell you
It does not price Skyline. Skyline has not published rates on its site, and none of the figures above come from Skyline. If you want Skyline’s pricing, ask directly.
It is not search volume, and it is not a quality signal. A $20-an-hour rate and an $80-an-hour rate can both be a fair price for different scopes. Cheaper is not automatically worse, and expensive is not automatically better. Check the scope, not just the number.
It goes stale. Every rate above carries the date it was published or last modified. Some are current for 2026; a couple date to 2023 and 2021 and are included because they are still live, cited pages, not because they are fresh. Check the date before you rely on a number.
Get a quote you can actually compare
If you want a number specific to your project instead of a market range, you can request a scope review: send one drawing set, your standards and a note on what you would keep in your own office. You will get a quote for that scope, in writing, that you can check against the ranges above.
