Published rates for outsourced drafting run from about $7 an hour to $130. Same word on the invoice, “drafting,” and a spread of more than eighteen to one.

The short answer: the cost to outsource drafting runs from about $18 to $130 an hour, from $25 a sheet for defined sets, and from about $2,000 a month for a dedicated drafter. The spread mostly reflects what surrounds the drafter: management, QA, revisions and rush. Compare cost per finished sheet, not the hourly rate.

Every figure below comes from a page a vendor or publisher has posted. Those pages are asking prices, not quotes, and several carry no date. Use them to see the shape of the market, then get a written quote against a written scope.

This page is for principals and operations managers at US architecture firms who are pricing outside drafting help and want to compare quotes fairly.

What does it cost to outsource drafting in 2026?

Here is what is published, with the source and the date where the page gives one.

Read “from” as the bottom of the range. A starting price is where the vendor’s cheapest job begins, not what a permit set costs.

For a benchmark on your side of the table, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for drafters at $32.74 an hour, or $68,090 a year, as of May 2025. That is wages only, before benefits. A vendor rate below that number is built on a different cost base than the one you hire from.

Why is the spread so wide, and what does each tier buy?

Two published pages give a clear answer, and they agree.

Zedtreeo lists a managed hourly rate from about $18 and a staffing-only option from $7 an hour “without managed services.” The gap is the management: someone who assigns the work, checks it and answers your questions.

Brandywine CAD says basic drafting runs about $75 an hour, and that adding a project manager and design work raises it to about $125. Same drafting. Different amount of judgment and oversight around it.

So the tiers, roughly, are:

• Staffing only. You direct the drafter and check the work. Lowest rate, highest load on your senior people.
• Managed drafting. A team lead and a QA step sit between you and the drafter. The rate rises to cover them.
• Managed drafting with project management and design input. The rate is highest because more of the thinking is included.

If you are wondering where the extra money goes, look at who checks the work before it reaches you. That is usually the difference.

How do you compare quotes? Cost per finished sheet

An hourly rate tells you nothing until you know the hours. This grid is only arithmetic: rate times hours per sheet.

A sheet of door schedules and a sheet of wall sections do not take the same time. Ask each vendor for hours per sheet type, or for a fixed price per sheet against a defined list. And note where the models cross. A $25 sheet price equals about 1.4 hours at $18 an hour. Past that, per-sheet pricing is the cheaper one, if the price covers what you need.

Example (illustrative). This is arithmetic on invented hours, not a client project. Take a 30-sheet set. Vendor X quotes $18 an hour and expects 3 hours per sheet: $1,620. Vendor Y quotes $100 an hour and expects 1.5 hours per sheet: $4,500. X is cheaper. But if X’s first pass needs three rounds of your corrections, and the set ends up at 8 hours per sheet, X’s total is $4,320. Now the two are within about $200 of each other, and X has cost your team the review time on top.

The rates cancel out once the cheaper vendor needs about 5.6 times the hours ($100 divided by $18). You will rarely hit that number exactly. But the direction is worth remembering.

What costs don’t show up in the rate?

Most of the surprises fall into five groups.

• Rush. Cad Crowd’s published redline table prices an overnight text markup at $160 against $60 for five days, about 2.7 times. Structural dimensional markups run $195 against $95, about 2.1 times. If you buy overnight all the time, you are not paying the five-day price.
• Your review hours. Every hour a senior person spends fixing a vendor’s misreads is a cost the invoice never shows.
• Revisions past the included rounds. See the scope template above.
• Unclear markups. They cost the same whoever draws them. The handoff note in the outsourcing guide is one way to cut that.
• Set-up. Standards handoff, file transfers, an NDA. Small, but not zero.

And a note on savings claims. One vendor advertises about 50 to 60 percent savings against US in-house production. Treat that as a sales claim until you run your own numbers. The in-house vs outsourced cost model shows how.

Get a written scope before you get a number
